DUNS is a unique nine-digit identification number provided by Dun & Bradstreet (D&B). The Federal government uses the DUNS number to identify organizations. The DUNS number is site-specific; therefore, each distinct physical location of an entity (such as branches, divisions and headquarters) is assigned a DUNS number.
To obtain a DUNS number assignment, a requestor must call D&B at 866-705-5711 and indicate they are a Federal cooperative agreement applicant. D&B will let the requestor know if they already have a number. Company representatives should be sure to identify themselves as a Federal cooperative agreement applicant. If a company does not have a DUNS number, D&B will ask them to provide the following information:
Legal business name
Headquarters name and address of organization
Doing business as (DBA) or other name for your organization
Physical address, city, state and zip code
Mailing address (if separate)
Telephone number
Contact name and ritle
Number of employees at company’s physical location
Even though this program is administered by Dun & Bradstreet, obtaining a DUNS number is absolutely free for all entities doing business with the Federal government. However, D&B phone representatives sometimes endeavor to sell people their services.
