Help at Hand for the 59% of Women Who Would Choose to Work Part-Time

The majority of women working in full time positions would opt for part-time work given the choice says a recent survey. The study was commissioned to mark the launch of JustPartTime.co.uk – a new website which has information on virtually anything and everything part-time to help women run their life. Over 300 adults were questioned for the study which found that 59% of women in full time employment would prefer the part time option.
With a labour force of over 7.4 million part time workers in the UK – 78% of which are female – more and more people are opting to pursue part time activities in both their work and leisure time. The JustPartTime.co.uk website is full of information on a range of areas such as part time childcare, college courses, leisure activities , jobs and business services. “Our aim is to provide all the contacts that a woman might need to organise her life in one place,” explains Nina Daranijo who set up the company.
Nina had the idea for the website after starting her own family. “Like many mums, I have valuable skills, and wanted the stimulation of working, whilst being able to spend time with my children. I decided to look for part time work, but soon found that I didn’t know where to find advice on part-time work, part-time child care or part-time training,” explains Nina. “I tried the internet but couldn’t locate any sites specifically dedicated to part time jobs or leisure, so I decided to create my own. JustPartTime.co.uk puts employers and part time job seekers in touch with each other, whilst also giving people opting for a lifestyle change all the information that they need in one place.”
With many businesses waking up to the benefits of part time workers, the Government is keen to promote a work-life balance, recognising the difficulty in struggling to juggle home, career and family. Women are also particularly vulnerable to lower pay. As Julie Mellor, Chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission commented earlier this year “Britain is facing a crisis if it does not address the need for flexible hours at work. Women are hardest hit by the part-time ‘penalty’ which channels them into low paid jobs with poor prospects…”
As a working mum herself, Nina Daranijo is in agreement with Mellor. “If I can make it easier for women of all ages to find part time work or training, locate affordable child care, or just find ways of enjoying themselves all in one place, then the website will have done its job. I really think that part time work and leisure is the way of the future, and we are able to point people in the right direction so that they have all the information at their fingertips.”
