Staying Fit While Working at Desk Jobs

Most of us have desk jobs where we are at our desk for at times 7 – even 10 hours! It’s obvious that doing this is bad for you, but it could literally be killing you. The lifestyle where you stay put at a desk is not at all good for your health. Other than minor issues such as obesity, it could lead to more serious problems such as heart diseases and even strokes; in short, life-threatening diseases.

Is there a way for you to overcome this problem? We’ve spoken to a few personal trainers and have collected a list of things that you could do to stay fit even while you work at a desk job.

Staying fit working at a desk job

Tighten your Glutes

Yes, you read that right. It does sound totally weird, but when you’re on your desk writing emails or maybe answering phone calls, tighten up your glutes and thigh muscles while you are seated in an upright position. Do this for 10 – 15 seconds and then repeat again after an equally long pause.

Running while at your desk

Who said you cannot run while sitting? Have you ever heard of desk running? When sitting on your chair at work, sit back so that you are well supported and lift your legs off the floor one after another just like you’d do if you were walking. You’re going to be surprised how quickly you get exhausted. This is a really good exercise for those of us who cannot get away from our desks.

Wall sits

If you’ve got some privacy you’re going to want to get in some wall sits in between work. While you wait for a reply to an email or the next appointment give this a shot. Hold this position for as long as possible.

Frequent phone calls? Take them standing

Use your desk to balance yourself if needed, but when taking phone calls stand on one leg (You can do this discreetly too). Of course, you’re going to want to switch between legs as you see fit.

Nothing beats traditional exercise

The best thing to do is go to bed 30 minutes earlier and wake up early too. Use this time to go for a jog outside or even a simple walk around the neighbourhood. Some personal trainers suggested that you could even join a pet walking club where you take someone’s pet for a walk in the morning. That’s definitely a win-win situation.
